What Engineers Need to Know About NDT?

Effective communication between sustainment engineers and NDT technicians can be a challenge. In order to get the most out of NDT input it is necessary to understand the context. Toward that end this presentation will address the basic principles of ultrasonics, eddy current, radiography, fluorescent penetrant, and magnetic particle. It will also present a discussion of each method’s capabilities and limitations which will include Probability of Detection (PoD), reliability, and how these relate to the sustainment engineer’s information needs. To put this information into perspective there will be a hands-on demonstration of ultrasonic and eddy current and a discussion of case studies. Finally, in order to understand the people providing the data we will present the requirements for training, qualification, and certification of NDT personnel as well as efforts being undertaken on the NDT side to improve the communication process.
